NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME

The college has two units of National Service Scheme which aims at training members in the spirit of service and to promote opportunities for the development of character, leadership and spirit of service among volunteers. Students are encouraged to take up membership and profit by NSS certificate holders get the opportunities for service activities. NSS certificates holders get weightage marks for admission to higher courses and also grace mark.

Overview

N.S.S was started in 1969 with a view to promote social consciousness and a sense of responsibility as well as sense of discipline and dignity of labour among students. The scheme utilizes the leisure time of students in various items of social service which not only help the community but also provides an opportunity to the students to understand social conditions. The ultimate aim "has been to develop the personality of students through community service". N.S.S programmes are designed to interact with local needs and priorities.

Few specific objectives are

To understand the community in which they work
To understand themselves in relation to their community
To identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process
To develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
To utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems
To develop competence required for group living and sharing of responsibilities
To gain skills in mobilizing community participation
To acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude
To develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and To practice National Integration and social harmony.

The Motto

The motto or watchword of the National Service Scheme is 'NOT ME BUT YOU'. It underlines that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society on the whole.

MEMBERSHIP

Members are selected on the basis of aptitude. Admission is open to first year degree and PG students only. In order to become eligible for the N.S.S.certificate, volunteers have to put in 240 hours of regular activities and should have attended a 7 day camp.
